Oklahoma City Horn Club was founded by a group of music lovers, specifically horn (French Horn) players who wanted to create a space for hornists of all ages and abilities people to come together and share their passion for horn ensemble music. We are hopefully wishing to attract high school students in the future by offering an ensemble expressly for them.
At Oklahoma City Horn Club, we believe in the power of music to bring people together, inspire creativity, and promote positive change. We are committed to creating a safe and inclusive space for our community to connect and share their love of music.
We wish to celebrate the long history of performing music for multiple horns as originally conceived by Viennese Horn players that was organized by Imperial Hornist Josef Schantl in 1879. This original group is now known as the Wiener Waldhorn Verein (Vienna Horn Society) and has influenced the proliferation of horn ensembles across the globe.
Spanning a playing range of over four octaves, the instrument offers many timbres from which creative arrangers can make effective and pleasing arrangements for performers to play and audiences to enjoy. Our library has been donated by Dr. Eldon Matlick, Retired professor at the University of Oklahoma who has among the most significant horn ensemble libraries in the country.
Horn ensemble literature spans from music from choral, orchestral, film, jazz, and pop genres. On occasion, we may incorporate additional instruments to further enhance the ensemble and allow a more diverse repertoire for audiences to enjoy.
